Hanging on the wall in my office is a list of 15 Things productive people do differently. One of the reasons I'm so focused on productivity is because I want to be more efficient not just productive. Consider this quote:
"Basically, productive refers mainly to the quantity of something, while effective refers to the quality of something. Being productive focuses on how much work you are getting done, while being effective focuses on getting a job done in the most efficient way possible."
"Being effective focuses on getting a job done in the mos efficient way possible." I'm all about being efficient. From my work experience, I know it's easy to spend time on doing busy work: filing, cleaning up emails, overtalking with co-workers. Not that some of this stuff is necessary. We do want to get to know our co-workers more. But it can be a detriment to our time and lessens our production overall.
For me, being efficient is about knowing how long tasks take and carving out the time to do it. It's also about taking charge of your time by addressing potential interruptions with a kind, "I have limited time", so the person knows to limit their exchange with you. When we recognize the importance of our time, it's easier to convey to others what kind of time you need to be effective. We don't want to find ourselves doing something for the sake of doing something. The work you do should always lead to helping others accomplish their work goals too. And being committed to meeting your deadlines.
It's important to consider that we all have time-wasting habits and work to minimize or remove them from your daily routine. You free up more time to do the things that enhance your productivity because you're not bogged down doing something that doesn't add to the quality of your work.
