let go of form

In all martial arts studies, there comes a point in your practice when you “let go of form” and just move naturally. This means your mind stops thinking about the technique and your body moves from memory and experience. This practice extends to all things, including spirituality and recovery.

For those of us recovering from addiction, the most popular recovery form are the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. You can review the 12 Steps here. The steps are essentially a guide on living a sober lifestyle. “Apply, rinse, repeat”. And like any study on form, you continue to learn and relearn. There is never a pinnacle to be attained, you just keep getting better and better at applying the form.

For me, practicing sobriety is a path toward self-mastery. And masters of anything never stop studying their art. There is always more to learn, more to give back to others, more to teach. At some point, you don’t think about the 12 Steps (the form), you just live them.
