No magic to saying “I’m sorry”. Just do it.

“While it can feel embarrassing and uncomfortable to apologize, it’s a sign of maturity and good character. Unfortunately there is no particular magic to saying “I’m sorry.” Just do it.”
Daniel Ek, Tribe of Mentors, p. 291.

This is so true! And it’s relevant to Step 9 where we make amends (say “I’m sorry”) to those we’ve hurt. But making amends is a two-way street in the sense that when you apologize to those you’ve hurt you’re also healed in the exchange. Whether or not the other person forgives you doesn’t matter. What matters is the action you take to ask for forgiveness.

Click on the video to learn how someone who had every right not to forgive learns to forgive, and how the act itself changed the trajectory of his life:

“We do not have to be victims of our experiences.”
-Sammy Rangel

If someone like Sammy Rangel can forgive, then you can too. Rangel's story is an inspiration for those of us struggling with Step 9.
