I’ve been using a chest of drawers to hold my daily reading books. This piece of furniture has been in my family since I was a child; so I’m guessing it’s around 40 or more years old. As I was moving my books around, I saw the word “Petey” written at the bottom of one of the drawers and a flood of memories came back to me.
The first thing I thought is I wonder how long this has been here? And who wrote it? Maybe me? Then my thoughts wandered to my Dad who used to call me “Petey”. I know…it’s a childhood name that only my Dad used so it has meaning to me, especially since he’s passed on to the next life.
Lately, I’ve been sharing with family and friends that I’m preparing for my life 30+ years from now. As of this blog, I’m 52 years old but I know I need to prepare now if I’m going to be mobile in 30 years. I want to be one of those seniors that’s able to move about on their own; preferably not in a wheelchair. Some of my peers think I’m getting ahead of myself, but it could be my personal perspective because I have grandkids who are 6, 5, and 1.5 years old. Time will fly by in a blur and I want to be around to watch them grow into the amazing human beings they can become. So, it’s important to me that I make changes now in anticipation of being alive for 30+ more years.
My Dad lived to 89 years old, and my Mom is 83 years old. There’s a good chance I have the same potential for longevity. My goal is to thrive throughout my life on earth for as long as possible. Even before my Dad’s passing, he was still working on his garden and walking around on his own. I want to be able to do the same.
I’m sharing all of this with you for a couple of reasons: 1) for a change in pace on what I share through my blog; and 2) so you can get to know me a little more. And if there’s a third reason, it’s probably because mortality is strong on my mind as many family and friends have passed suddenly in the past year. There’s no guarantee we have a certain amount of time left on this earth, but we can still live our life to the fullest and plan for the future. Life has more purpose and meaning when you work toward something.
“You can’t grow on a secure path. All of us should conquer something in life…and it needs a lot of work…and it needs a lot of risk.”
