self-will has limited power

“Though not a religious person, I have profound respect for the spiritual approach in such cases as yours. For most cases, there is virtually no other solution.”
Once more: The alcoholic at certain times has no effective mental defense against the first drink. Except in a few rare cases, neither he nor any other human being can provide such a defense. His defense must come from a Higher Power.
Alcoholic Anonymous “Big Book”, Chapter 3 More About Alcoholism, p. 43.

In general, the human race fully believes in the power of self-will. And even though I completely believe in the power of faith and God’s influence on the world, I believe self-will has some merit. But self-will inherently has limited power. First, because it’s a human effort. Second, no amount of self-will can overcome time or death.

No matter the strength and power of any human, even those that seem to have the strongest of wills are limited. They’re limited just by being human. I’m not saying self-will doesn’t achieve great and astounding things. I applaud the human will in that sense. But the will to change a behavior is limited by our own discipline and commitment. And there are times when both wane. It’s just human nature.

And even if there is such a thing as a super human who overcomes all odds and life obstacles, they will never overcome time or death. Time ticks away the same for all things throughout the universe. No human being can overcome time. And death is a natural course of existence at all levels. Even stars and planets die off eventually. Thus, no human will can ever overcome death.

From my experience, only God can overcome human behavior, time, and death. God changes the hearts of people. It’s why people who start loving God start making different life choices. They can’t act the same when they know there is a God who watches them all the time. God can time travel through our past and change our future. And finally, God is omnipotent. If He is the God we believe Him to be then there is no such thing as time to Him. Our God is timeless, and He is limitless. Unlike human effort. And unlike self-will.
