Sometimes I think we get the wrong idea of what spirituality is and what it means. I know I used to think spirituality was boring and there’s no fun in it. Who wants to spend time praying, being peaceful, and thinking about God all the time? Snooze fest.
Then I met a spiritual person who wasn’t what I expected one to be. She was bold, funny, and had an inner strength about her that caused me to want to learn more about spirituality. The lady’s name was Pastor Rachel Victoria. She went home to the Lord some years ago, but I will always remember her because she opened my mind to what it means to be spiritual.
I’ve been following God—practicing my spirituality—for over 17 years now. What I’ve learned is that spirituality is the practice of love. We learn more and more each day what it means to love like Jesus. And believe it or not, it’s not any easy path.
In a related article (click here), I call my walk with God the Path of Love. And like any chosen path its wrought with challenges, celebrations, confusion, doubt, and joy. There is something exciting and fulfilling when you learn something new about yourself and about God. The Path of Love isn’t boring like I thought it would be.
Along the Path of Love you’ll encounter many others who are on the same path. Some of them believe in Jesus and some of them don’t. But what we have in common is an effort to cultivate more love and peace in our lives. And that’s a good thing. A beautiful thing.
As part of my practice, I choose not to judge how others cultivate love and peace in their lives. Even though I follow the God of the Bible I don’t feel compelled to convince others to do the same. To me, I’m better off living out the commandments of the Bible and deepening my faith and show through my thoughts, words, and actions how God’s love can transform a person.
Truly, the path of love isn’t about attending church, being part of a bible study group, or even hanging out with like-minded people. It’s about learning and growing in love. It’s about living an excellent life and giving back to others by showing them how their lives can be transformed by following God. There’s nothing boring about that. Why? Because the world has enough pain and hurt, and when you’re on the path of love it’s all about bringing joy and healing to the world around you. And that is always a beautiful thing.
