“In order to truly love, to love at the depth that God would, one has to learn to let go. It’s an inevitable consequence of choosing love above all else.”
—Marvello V, 10/25/2010.
At last night’s (June 25, 2021) recovery group the topic for sharing was letting go. Everyone who shared knew exactly what it meant to them. No one was stumped by the topic, because everyone in the group was in the process of letting something go. The shares were heartfelt and powerful.
My role in the group is to follow-up behind the testimony speaker and give a brief recap of statements they made. Our speaker stated, “I couldn’t just physically and mentally let go.” It was this statement that rung true in all the hearts in attendance. So I shared that, “True love, real love, let’s go.”
When it comes to recovery, Step 3 asks us to let go: We made a decision to turn our wills and our lives over to the care of God. And when it comes to following God, He is always asking us to let go. Let go of what exactly? Anything that prevents us from being the best version of ourselves that we can. For many of us, that means letting go of using drugs, drinking alcohol, hurting ourselves, hurting others, stealing, manipulating, lying…the list can take several pages. The bottom-line is when you’re in recovery and following God you’re learning to let go.
Learning to let go is a process that I’m sure will take a lifetime. Because once you’ve learned to let go of one bad habit or behavior, you’ll be required to let go of another. As people in recovery (from whatever you’re addicted to), we accumulate a lot of bad habits, behaviors, ideas, and coping mechanisms. The further along you go in your sobriety, the more you’ll recognize that you’re clinging to things that no longer serve you. To achieve deeper levels of healing, you ultimately have to let go of things that prevent you from healing. It could mean forgiving someone, forgiving yourself, or developing new ways of coping with life. Letting go is not an easy thing to do, but it’s necessary if you’re to heal and become a whole person again.
